The December Project Book Three - Why Not Me (I Cheated)
For the third book of The December Project, I started reading Love Nina: A Nanny Writes Home, by Nina Stibbe, but found myself struggling. It was not bad, but it just wasn't really what I was in the mood for at the time. To begin with, it was an epistolary novel, and while I usually like that, it made it hard to get into this book. I was determined to work my way through it anyway, when I got an email from the library saying that Mindy Kaling's Why Not Me? was available for me to check out. I had been on the waiting list for this book since it came out in September, so I could not help myself, and I cheated on The December Project.
I listened to Kaling's previous book Is Everyone Hanging out Without Me on a long car ride and really liked it. From the tales of her childhood to her struggles to make it as a writer on a hit TV show, I found myself laughing out loud. I breezed through the new book very quickly but did not like it as much as her first. It could be because this is more about her life as the star of her own TV show, and perhaps the struggle resonated with me more. Or, it could be because I liked hearing her read the first one in her own voice with her own inflections. I did laugh out loud in portions of Why Not Me but not as often. I would recommend though. If nothing else, it's nice to be reminded that there are smart, funny women achieving great things.
